With the spring knocking right
at our doors, it is time to welcome the beauty of blooming flowers back into
our lives. Summers make for higher temperatures forcing us to seek cooling
freshness elsewhere. Why not incorporate your favorite flowers into refreshing
drinks that will not only cool your parched throat but also infuse you with the
goodness of nature. Learn below how to make simple syrup with the help of the
petals of your favorite flowers.
WHAT IS SIMPLE SYRUP?
Simple syrup is a basic sweet
concoction made of sugar and water that is added as a sweetener in many drinks
and dishes. Indians will recognize this as the ‘Chashni’ they use in sweets
such as Rossogolla and Gulab Jamun. Simple syrup is very easy to make at home
and can just as easily be imbued with any natural flavor you like. The
flavoring need not be limited to petals, you can also use bark, spices, herbs,
and fruits to create unique libations that will cool down your body and help
you relax.

complicate the process.

Saucepan

Use enough water to make the
amount of syrup you need. Begin with one cup and increase gradually. Have a cup
of sugar at hand to add to the mixture. The non-reactive cups are usually made
of enamel, glass or stainless steel. A decorative jar is simply for display
purposes. If you want to portray your handiwork for all to see, a fashionable
jar will make it look all the better.
The amount of flower petals
you use will depend on the type of flower.

HOW TO MAKE THE SYRUP?
1.
Add the
water to the saucepan and heat over a medium low flame.
2.
Add the
sugar to the water. Churn the mixture till the sugar has melted. Let it simmer
for a while.
3.
Depending
on the rate of viscosity you want, you can vary the ratio of contents. Use more
sugar to create a much thicker syrup.
4.
Add the
flower petals of your chosen blossom in the quantity recommended above to the
non-reactive bowl. Pour the hot syrup on top till all the petals are
effectively drenched.
5.
Let the
mixture sit for at least half an hour. After cooling strain the petals out and
transfer the contents to the decorative jar.
6.
Store in
refrigerator for up to 2 months. Use in your drinks and dishes whenever
required.
