4 MOVIES THAT COMMEMORATE OUR MOTHERS

How often do we tell our mothers that we love them? How often do we hug them out of the blue? How often do we sit with them and talk about everything under the vibrant sun? Not too often, we reckon. And ever since Mother’s Day has passed with fanfare, it seems as if mothers are receding back to obscurity. Why should only one day be dedicated to these goddesses in disguise? They deserve a pompous celebration all year round. And if you are out of ideas about how to spend time with your mother, here is what you can do. Grab a seat and park yourself there along with your mother for the next three hours. Don’t forget to grab a bucket of fresh popcorn. Because it is movie time! Here is a list of movies that commemorated the undyingly affectionate spirit of our mothers. It is time to relive those emotions together.
Here are the movies that portray to perfection a mother’s sacrifices and love.

1.     MOTHER INDIA (1957)

The very the epitome of motherhood, this movie crystallized the struggles of being a single mother in a patriarchal community like India. The movie rightfully bagged a nomination in the Oscar awards Foreign Language Films category for its screenplay, acting, and storytelling. How Nargis could possibly pull it off with such grace is beyond all of us.

2.     ENGLISH VINGLISH (2012)

Sridevi is better known for her damsel in distress roles in movies such as Mr. India. A class apart herself, she came out of retirement to put the final embellishment on her acting career. English Vinglish took the crowds by surprise as witnessed by the full theaters and rave reviews. The story revolves around a simplistic mother who can utter no more than a few English words. Facing her family’s ridicule encourages her to learn the language in the heart of New York. The film ends with a flourish as Sridevi gives a resounding speech about love and family in crisp English. A modern rendition of ‘Mom is Always Right.

3.     MOM (2017)

Another Sridevi flick. It’s as if Sridevi specializes in depicting powerful mothers who can bring the world to its knees to protect her daughter. A stepmother reduced to a position of trophy wife by her stepdaughter Sridevi silently bears through her daughter’s jibes. After a horrifying night leaves her daughter incontinent, Sridevi takes it upon herself to avenge her daughter’s rape. A beautiful tale of courage and spirit.

4.     PAA (2009)

Who can forget the surreal display by Amitabh Bacchan of a kid suffering from progeria. His role overshadowed that of Vidya Balan, his mother. Vidya Balan sacrificed her entire life and career to raise his son as normal as possible. With his genetic condition, he was destined to die very soon. But yet she plods on, fighting odds and defying fate itself. A beautiful story of a mother’s undying love for her child, whatsoever the case may be.
