HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SUCCULENTS

A little greenery inside can go a long way in increasing the liveliness and color of your homes. One factor that discourages us from adding plants to our house décor is the maintenance related to the. They are supposed to be delicate and need a lot of care. Daily watering, trimming, airing, fertilizing, and general care make us rethink our plant choices. But what if there was a way to avoid all these negative points and still be able to enjoy the freshness that comes with all plants?

Succulents have grown in popularity everywhere as green options for the indoor household. Succulents are basically desert plants that have come all the way to our homes due to their low maintenance characteristics. They are durable, portable, and require little to no attention. They come in several attractive shapes and sizes that can jazz up your dry rooms a bit.

These hardy plants have lived in the deserts ever since the beginning sue to which they have adapted to the sun, dryness, and biting wind. They basically store water in their stems and can make do with very little care. They do require a lot of sunlight, especially the colorful ones. While selecting one for your house, stick to smaller, green varieties which tend to do well indoors.

Another point to be kept in mind is that these plants are not pet friendly. Most of them have sharp thorns covering their bodies and a few others secrete sap that causes skin irritation. As beautiful as they are, try and keep your pets away from them.

The most common types of succulents that are suitable for indoor decoration are Cacti, Sempervivum, Sedum, and Haworthia.

Here are a few tips and tricks to properly care about these beautiful plants.

SUNLIGHT

These plants have come from the desert. They may not be thirsty for water but they sure as hell need ample sunlight. Place it in well-lit corner of your house. If it doesn’t receive enough sunlight, it’ll start stretching itself in search of it.

WATER

Not surprisingly, these plants do not need much water. Let the soil around the plant dry out completely before adding more water. If watered too much, clogging can lead to rotting of the roots. Generally, a well-drained pot needs to be watered every 2-3 weeks.

TEMPERATURE

While we all know that desert plants are used to extremely high temperatures, burning them won’t really help anyone. Keep them in a conservative temperature range to really see them bloom. Avoid extremes on both ends of the thermometer scale, not too cold and not too hot.

TOXOCITY

Most succulents are non-toxic fortunately. Even the toxic ones are only mild irritants. But they do have thorns that can cause puncture wounds. So keep your pets and babies away from these plants for their own safety.
